D543 Transect RB18 Coral gardens of Lophelia/Madrepora reefs (<25% living) with various species of Antipathes. Not Priority. Features: Mound, Escarpment. Water depth: -920 m. TL: 3.5 km SOL: 15° 24.466' W 55° 35.975' N

Highlights: Antipatharian coral Antipatharian coral Antipatharian coral Antipatharian coral Antipatharian coral - Leiopathes ? Yellow sea fan Sponges - Euplectella, Pheronema & Oceanapia Antipatharian coral - Leiopathes ? Brittlestar - Gorgonocephalus Antipatharian coral & stylasterid corals

Transect begins on a gentle downslope with coral reef comprising of Lophelia and Madrepora (<10 % living) and rubble/gravel areas. The motile crinoids are common throughout. Rocks and bedrock protrusions are frequent and primarily hosted Leiopathes sp. but Bathypathes sp., Phanopathes sp., Chrysopathes sp. are observed. Frequently observed Aphrocallistes beatrix, cathedral sponges and venus flower basket.

START VIDEO [00:00:00]/08:12 [1] Lophelia pertusa/Madrepora oculata reef on raised ground hosting Leiopathes sp. and Phanopathes sp. Koehlermetra porrecta dominates. [00:02:00] Rope found at the bottom. [00:05:00] [2] Here steep downhill mud/coral gravel/coral rubble with occasional coral reef framework until [00:13:00] [3] where the sediment is the same plus occasional cobbles/boulders. Epifaunally rich on boulders which include scleractinians, antipatharians, K. porrecta and encrusting sponges. [00:16:00]-[00:18:00] ROV stops for imagery. [00:23:00]-[00:37:00] ROV stops for imagery and sampling Primnoidea sp. (unbranching) OTU1193. [01:12:00]-[01:16:00] ROV stops for imagery and sampling Octocorallia sp. (pink). [01:22:00]-[01:23:00] ROV stops for imagery. [01:27:00]-[00:28:00] ROV stops for imagery. [00:29:00] Vision blurred for a few seconds. [00:32:00] Vision is fuzzy/too bright on bottom right of the camera. [01:59:00] The ROV reaches an interfluves at the bottom on the hill and start climbing a steep/vertical wall. [4] Gravel/coral gravel/coral rubble/cobbles/sparse boulders. This part of the transect hosts Aphrocallistes sp., sparse living/dead L. pertusa colonies and antipatharians (including Stichopathes cf. gravieri and Bathypathes sp.). Note, abundant Porifera ‘white ping pong balls’ cover the bottom. [02:09:00] A glimpse shows the bedrock substrate beneath gravel. [5] From this point, the transect is covered in large boulders that hosts large sized Leiopathes sp., Phanopathes sp., Desmophyllum sp. as well as different species of Porifera (giant, glass, encrusting). [02:12:00] [6] The sediment is predominatly sand/gravel/mosaic coral reef framework (dead) on steep/vertical wall with sparse/rare Cidaris cidaris and ophiuroids sp (indet). [02:13:00] ROV stops for imagery and pushcore sampling (2) until END VIDEO 10:36.

N. B. This transect encountered Hoplostethus atlanticus [00:11:00] once and a few juveniles of Galeus melastomus OTU1005 and Synaphobranchus kaupii. Elasmobranhcia and Actinopterygii were found swimming on coral reef framework and reefs on boulders.
