D483B Transect 30 Very strange carbonate features (pinnacles, gullies) arising from mud plain. Juvenile holothurian aggregation, patchy xenophyophores, cobble patches with barnacles. Features of Interest: canyon, escarpments Water Depth: 1577-1348 m

Highlights: Chimaera Carbonate pinnacles Hexactinellid sponges Fish Black plastic White ray Dumbo octopus - Grimpoteuthis Sea pen Ling Hexactinellid sponge & anemone

A lot of biological activity was observed in the water-column above soft sediment. The seafloor is colonised by xenophyophores and sea pens. Three distinct patches of the small elpidiid holothurians are noted. Gullies and rock outcrops occur at the base of the canyon. Fishing debris (nets/ropes/line) is present in this area as are large chimerids. A large boulder, approx. 10 m2 was observed in a depression, carbonate rock formations in the form of large towers and spires also observed, all colonised by yellow and blue encrusting sponges. The ground transitions from soft to sandy to rocky area with barnacles before xenophyophores and seapen assemblages reappear along with small orange roughy.

START VIDEO [00:00:00]/02:49 [1]: Transect starts on relatively flat mud with patchy dense aggregations of juvenile holothurians (Elpidiidae sp, OTU1116). [00:05:00] [2] the landscape dips revealing rippled mud/sand and carbonate protrusions forming pinnacles and gullies with sparse mixed corals and Ophiomusa lymani. The sediment then rises up back to [00:07:00] [3] mud “plateau” with sparse patchy epifauna with both xenophyophores and cup corals and occasional sea pens. This is the main assemblage/ mosaic encountered throughout the dive. [00:24:00] [4] a large squared off carbonate boulder (2-3m round) and a couple of smaller boulders were encountered hosting sparse mixed corals especially Paramuricea sp. [00:25:00] [5] continue over mud with xenophyophores/cup corals. [00:31:28] [6] more protruding carbonate, ~5m high with pinnacles and gullies in interesting shapes. Again hosting mixed corals. [00:45:00] [7] ROV spins around and proceeds on over more mud xenophyophores/cup corals continued until END VIDEO 04:46.

START VIDEO [01:56:51]/04:51. Vision is obscured (mud/zoom issues) for the first 30s. [01:57:00] [8] The first of several patches of sparse pebbles and rare cobbles mainly colonised by barnacles, with xenophyophores dominating the intermediate mud areas. [02:03:00] [9] back to mud xenophyophores/cup corals. [02:08:00] [10] pebble/barnacle patch, with one boulder, [02:10:00] [11] mud xenophyophores/cup corals [02:11:00] [12] pebbles/barnacles rare cobbles, [02:13:00] [13] mud xenophyophores/cup corals, [02:14:00] [14] pebbles/barnacles rare cobbles, [02:17:00] [15] mud xenophyophores/cup corals, [02:19:00] [16] pebbles and barnacles again, but this time leading to a dense seam of cobbles/pebbles and barnacles with a couple of large lamellate sponges, the ROV zig zags over this before [02:25:00] [17] continuing back over mud xenophyophores/cup corals, [02:28:00] [18] a final sparse patch of pebbles/barnacles, [02:29:00] [19] continued xenophyophores/cup corals until the END VIDEO D [02:32:00]/ 05:28.
