D695 Transect 12 Interspersed geogenic and biogenic reefs across the dive featuring Solenosmilia variabilis reefs and deep-sea sponge aggregations on hard substrata and sparse coral rubble on soft sediment. P1. Water depth: 1646 -1500m. Feature: Interesting bathymetric data

Highlights: Lamellate sponge Hexactinellid sponge Antipatharian coral - Stichopathes Soft coral - Anthomastus Soft coral - Paramuricea Large white sponge Yellow sea fan Sponges & sea fan Epizoanthus pagurophilus Blue encrusting sponge Starfish

Of Note: Solenosmilia coral garden.

Followed planned transect (~50 m) before turning west up-slope. A seafloor of pebble/cobble substrate and occasional rocks transitioning to fine sediment coral rubble upslope. A diverse coral garden is observed, with Solenosmilia variabilis, Paramuricea sp. and sponges (various morphotypes). Hermit crabs with zooanthids are common throughout the dive. Some litter encountered.

START VIDEO [00:00:00]/05:08. Interspersed geogenic and biogenic reefs across the dive featuring Solenosmilia variabilis reefs and deep-sea sponge aggregations on hard substrata and sparse coral rubble on soft sediment. [1] The dive starts on soft sediment on steep slope with boulder/pebbles and aggregation of corals and sponges. [00:02:00] ROV stops for sampling two push cores. [00:10:00] [2] Geogenic reef with lamellate sponges, Paramuricea sp. and Stichopathes sp. living on rock and mud. [00:13:00] Mud cloud/ obscured vision for a few seconds. [00:25:00] [3] Massive lobose sponges, encrusting sponges, Solenosmilia colonies and Acanthogorgia armata living on mud and cobbles. [00:42:00] [4] Here sediment changes into coarse sediment with sparse epifauna including Epizoanthus sp. 1 and Ceriantharia. [00:48:00] [5] Geogenic reefs recorded on frequent boulders with Solenosmilia colonies, solitary scleractinians, Paguridae and Epizoanthus sp. 1. [00:58:00] Obscured vision. [01:02:00] [6] Coral rubble starts to be consistent and uniform on moderate coarse sediment slope. A few lamellate sponges and encrusted species present on cobbles and boulders. [01:16:00] Mud cloud/obscured vision. END VIDEO [01:18:00]/06:20.
